Life With Father - William Powell, Irene Dunne - 1947

Best Version I've Seen on DVD
Excellent, nostalgic film based on a turn-of-the-century family and their odd, eccentric, but lovable and topsy-turvy life. Beautifully restored version - best I've ever seen.

Love the picture quality, audio - everything about this film - really cinema quality. Reminds us of a time and place when life was simpler, sweeter, and certainly more innocent.

I watch this film over and over again. It's witty, sad, and hysterically funny in parts. This film is a slice of history; a look into the lives of what a real American family was like, but sadly will probably never be again. At least we can view this film frequently to remind us all of how good times were way back when......

If you purchase any version of this film, be sure to get the Moving Picture Archive release. You will not be disappointed.

BEWARE this version is edited!!
Beware this is a PAL transfer and is 5 minutes shorter than US release. Transfer is good however it is shameful that the running time of 113 minutes is not stated! It's a cheap DVD-R to boot!!

The Politician's Wife

The politican's wife is a force to be reckoned with.
The Politician's Wife plays out in three installments, each lasting a little over an hour. This playing time is needed to allow for the intricate plotting of this complex drama. In the first part Flora Matlock, wife of Tory minister and rising star Duncan Matlock, learns that her husband has been unfaithful to her. This infidelity is ironic given that Duncan represents the family in the conservative English government. At first Flora is surprised and angry. We watch as she packs her bags to leave her husband. Before she finishes her packing she gets pressure from all sides to support her husband. She gives in to the manipulations of the men who want to keep Duncan in power. A little later on Flora learns from Duncan's assistant that the affair with an escort girl, Jennifer Cairn, lasted for a year or so. She is given pictures and an audio tape documenting Duncan's infidelity.

A Political Morality Tale for All Times
This is one of the great revenge stories of all times. Paula Milne has written the script to a three-part miniseries seen not too long ago on Masterpiece Theatre called "The Politician's Wife." The Minister for Family (of all people) is caught in a love nest scandal. And like a certain President's wife of recent memory, his spouse is expected by The Party to stand behind him. Well, she does-and in the most original way possible. As all the Old Boys rally behind this despicable lowlife, the wife uses that very system of disinformation to get back a bit of her own. Just how she does it and with what results I refuse to say, because I want you to savor this jaundiced view of inner-party workings and how they destroy whatever traces of humanity those concerned might have had once.

Well, this show is now yours for the viewing on an Acorn Media DVD (AMP 7117), and I suggest you grab it. It is due to appear on July 6, 2004; but I wanted to give you lots of warning.

Orthodox Stance

Best Boxing Film Of The Century!
Jason Hutt brings to the screen a true story of a real fighter in every sense of the word. Dmitriy Salita grows equally as a skilled boxer, a religious Jew and most importantly as a man with a robust level of integrity. As the film progresses one becomes wrapped up in the personal and professional life of Dmetriy Salita rather than in only the actual boxing, which is spectacularly chronicled by Mr. Hutt. I was fascinated by the way all the women in the audience were captivated and empathetically enrolled into the story. Well worth the viewing time!

An amazing story
Though I'm a fan of boxing films (especially covering the era up through Ali), I think this film will appeal to those not usually drawn to boxing. Given the demands of the sport, boxing films often have a quasi-spiritual, almost monastic feel to them. This film has a double dose of that since the boxer in question, Dmitriy Salita, is not only a Ukranian-born immigrant to Brooklyn, but an observant, Orthodox Jew.

Orthodox Stance, like the best documentaries, leaves you wondering if the director simply lucked onto an amazing story. The answer in this case is yes--for the main character is incredibly compelling--and no--for this film is skillfully made (staying out of the way of the various personalities while allowing them to speak for themselves) and then assembled into something truly memorable. A great film full of great scenes, Orthodox Stance has stayed with me since seeing it over a year ago. Highly recommended.

Amazing movie!
Very well directed, and a very compelling character - this film breaks new ground. The main character is presented in an authentic and genuine way, and those around him add to his unfolding life saga. I heartily recommend!

Journey of the Universe: An Epic Story of Cosmic, Earth and Human Transformation

Wow! The Next "Cosmos" and "Power of Myth" rolled into one
I caught this when it was on PBS and I absolutely loved it. A beautifully crafted, information packed romp through the history of the universe, the film makes you feel highly connected to the universe, the Earth and each other. If you liked Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" or Joseph Campbell's "Power of Myth," this is for you.

Excellent Film
I enjoyed watching this with my wife and daughter. This film is a great way to learn the interconnectedness of it all and to teach our daughter our history on a macro scale. Definitely worth watching!

A must see for all who breathe!

Great Film!
This is a wonderfully moving documentary that I cannot praise enough! Shared stories from farmers, hunters, environmentalists, naturalists, business entrepreneurs, and the interconnected community thriving in and near the Sourlands of New Jersey. I spent four years in this area personally and loved to watch a movie give glimpses into the lives of people working so hard to protect both the land and its inhabitants, be it man, plant, or animal.
It was a realistic take on the sometimes overwhelming problem we face with today's environment, but gave hope and solid examples of how people are trying their best to help a place they love.

A message of hope amidst environmental degradation
Sourlands is the name given to a largely undeveloped area of New Jersey. It has remained that way because the soil is of poor quality and it is strewn with boulders. It is also one of the few remaining natural habitats for several species, including migratory birds and amphibians.
However, to the inhabitants featured in this film, it is a great place to live, work, farm and invent and integrate new ways to be green. Many are transplants that felt the urge to become more in tune with nature and moved into the Sourlands. All are determined to incorporate energy saving technologies into their dwellings, one man's "castle" runs on hydrogen, there are solar panels, greenhouses, organic farms and people inventing simple ways to monitor and reduce energy usage.
The primary message from the film is that carbon emissions must be reduced and that the most effective way to do that is for each person to alter their behavior. For some, that involves massive investments in solar panels...

Vexed: Series 2

After a rocky first episode, a super sophomore season
If the first season brought you here, you will be delighted to know that Jack is as clueless and self-absorbed as ever (and we are the better for it).

But the second season opener threatens to take that away from us, as Jack seems more tame (though not too tame to turn a murder into a car-shopping opportunity)--though then the season settles down for all the outrageous quips and preposterous situations you watch this for, all in the name of British crime fighting. So be patient. After the slow season opener, you get five follow-on episodes of great fun.

Season two mixes up the show a bit--a new partner (Miranda Raison), who gets her share of screen time, and an occasional foray into situations other than murder. And first episode aside, the season is stronger for her addition. Raison is a more rounded character, and she hold her own on screen.

The rest of the fine ensemble cast is intact. So if you loved the first season, there is twice as much to...

Great Crime Show
I have always been a fan of crime television. There is something about a good murder mystery that really gets your adrenaline pumping. When the show in question also features a strong female lead, its even better. DI Georgia Dixon and her partner DI Jack Armstrong provide almost as much humor as they do suspense in this fun show and they bumble through crime scenes and sometimes only solve them thanks to luck being on their side. The two of them couldn't be more different, and yet they somehow make it work. You'll laugh, you'll bite your nails, and you will relate to this two very human characters.With the amazing Vexed Series Two on DVD, you will be getting 365 minutes of back to back action that will leave you at the edge of your seat. Just sit back and enjoy British drama at its best. I had never seen Vexed before getting this DVD set to review, but let me tell you, once I got it I was so enthralled I watched the complete set in only a few days.

Great fun
Comparisons to Vexed Series 1 are inevitable, and to my mind Series 2 comes out on top.

We started watching Vexed because of Lucy Punch (whom we loved in Doc Martin), but really her character in Vexed seemed kind of world-weary and with issues of her own. On the other hand, Jack and George really offset each other to bring out the humor. George's issues are more about her own sense of perfectionism, which works better for a comedy. She manages to make Jack seem more of a lovable doofus whereas in Series 1 he sometimes seemed more like a jerk. George and Jack get into some very funny situations, and it's really peripheral that they are solving crimes. Toby Stephens and Miranda Raison have great chemistry. I hope they work together again.

Both seasons are recommended, but Series 2 is the maraschino cherry and umbrella on the cocktail.

Insignificant Other

Funny movie for intellectuals with a brain.
If it is skin you want and typical hollywood budgets/plots don't bother.
Otherwise a jewel in the rough. Not saying I am such intellect but I do appreciate art.

An Engagement And A Song

My wife and I were really getting into this show. Sorry it was pulled! Did they complete the show? Hope we can see the rest.

Ready for Love
I was so sad to see this show cancelled on TV so quickly but was thrilled to find out that Amazon offers the episodes. I like this show better than The Bachelorette/Bachelor. The professional matchmakers are a great addition. I love listening to their perspectives on the developing relationships and they give great advice! I hope the fact that they screen the young women as potential matches for the three bachelors will increase the odds for some real, long term romances to blossom. My only criticism is that some of the segueways are annoying with the flashing pictures.

Love the idea
This show should have been given more time or put on a different time slot. It was just starting to get interesting. I'm a romantic at heart I love to see people find the love of there life Watching it on line is not the same..

Full Body of Work

Came in on episode 3 and was hooked instantly!
This show is more about art than it is tattooing. Absolutely fascinating to see these guys and gals create art in different mediums on the fly (some of the things they're asked to do they've never done before). Another aspect that makes this show so appealing is the artists are not the typical insufferable human beings that are the standard fare in most reality shows. Each has a story (as do the individuals they tattoo) that most people can sympathize with.

Not Pete Wentz Most Shining Moment
I do enjoy the show mostly because I'm a fan of tattoo artistry. I was excited to see Pete Wentz as Season 2 new host but as the season progressed he did not. His introductions to the challenges are robotic and lacking any conviction or appreciation of the work being performed. I'm not sure if he's trying or if this is just another gig to generate income, but he's not good. I hope the show continues, but not with him as host. Bring back Kimberly. Somebody with energy and passion.

If you love tattoos or appreciate art and can tolerate reality tv format it is great
I enjoyed this series very much, part of me wishes all of the artists were a little closer in competition with one another instead of just a few, but there were some really beautiful pieces done this season. If you are an art enthusiast, or just love tattoo shows this one is good, but it has a little bit if that reality tv drama just to warn you. The show is similar to Ink Master if you watch that. Cannot wait for the next season already

We adore Dora!
Dora gives me a much-needed break from my demanding little toddler and is an educational show that teaches her things in fun ways. I just love having Dora on our Amazon Prime!

Great Learning for Her, Quite Time for Us
My daughter loves Dora and at 21mo she's counting, saying phrases and recognizing items. When she's fussy, Dora will calm her down.

Dora is Muy Bueno!!!
My 2 year old loves Dora! He knows all of the characters names and and the story lines. My little guys has learned some of his colors names in English and in Spanish watching Dora.

Also It's not a bad show to have to sit through as an adult.

After the debacle of that collection, I see no difference. Most of these films were included in the '35 years' collection though there are some new ones included and some were dropped. This 40 disc collection focuses on Clint Eastwood's 40 year relationship and film work with Warner Bros. --the place Clint calls home. And it is a bonanza. Don't listen to any negative critiques. The two documentaries alone (Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story 2013 & The Eastwood Factor 2010 - extended version) by Richard Schickel, an American author, journalist, and documentary filmmaker, are worth the price alone with edifying and insightful commentary on Eastwood as a director. Excellent commentary and accolades by actors and directors who have worked with Clint: Meryl Streep, Gene Hackman, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, Morgan Freeman, Hillary Swank, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and more. There is also a 48 page hardcover pocketbook included with rare photos of Clint Eastwood on the various sets.

I personally like the way the DVDs are grouped by genre within the packaging. This set does not contain the "Dollars Trilogy" or "Play Misty for Me" or "High Plains Drifter,"...

Jimmy

Best film I have seen in a long time!
We watched this as a family last night and we just sat in silence when it was finished. All I can say is WOW! Fantastic cinematography, sound track, and acting. The casting is over the top superb. The screenwriting is well done - believable and draws you in immediately. It is intense, yet fun; full of conflict, yet loving. The use of irony throughout is extremely effective - just when you think you have it figured out, they flip you upside down and take you with them. The most important thing I appreciate about this film is that it is wholesome and honors what is right. There are no language or modesty issues or inappropriate scenes. Those things aren't needed to make a top-notch film - and Jimmy is a prime example of that. I highly recommend this film.

Great film, outstanding performance from the lead
Very highly recommended - one of the best dramas I have seen in a long time. (It would be ideal family viewing except for a few intense scenes -- for that reason, recommended for older children and up.)

The title character is played by Ian Colletti, who does a truly exceptional job playing a boy with special needs. The storyline involves family relationships (especially between a boy and his grandpa) and elements of faith (with no hint of moralism or preachiness). Special mention needs to be made of the cinematography, but all around this is a quality film: story, cast, sound/music - Loved it.

Great Heartfelt Movie
I would recommend reading the book, Jimmy by Robert Whitlow, before watching the movie. The book (as all books are) is better than the movie, much more detail and character development. But this was a really good movie made from a book. The acting was excellent and I truly enjoyed it.

House Of The Dead II [HD]

Easily as good as the first
Its quite a bit different than the first House of the Dead but some of the same players and easily as fun. I actually liked it a little more because its longer and really puts the characters in a lot of tight zombie encounters. The "long night" scenario on the college campus (watch it to see what I mean) makes it one of those "fun" zombie movies that takes you on a long nights ride. Definitely worth renting. If you liked the first one, or liked the remake of "Day of the Dead" which is a lot like this, then you'll like this.

The Bourne Ultimatum (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Rewriting the genre
A satisfying conclusion to the trilogy? That would be like crediting "The Matrix" with a satisfying level of originality.

Everything the makers, cast and crew have learned about what makes the Bourne formula tick, and click, is revved to supercharged perfection in this pinnacle of a movie.

More is not always better (Matrix 2?), but with careful attention to detail and a plot that works like a Rolex, Ultimatum's unrelenting pace never feels overblown. Matt Damon's impenetrable oasis of razor focus and quiet, seething menace, now seeming to melt glass, finds a new level of counterpoint in this movie. Damon has become so riveting in this role, it's almost possible to overlook the stellar cast around him, matching step for step in a multi-threaded, multi-tiered, multi-national locomotive of twists and action played out with the orchestration of a Beethoven score.

There's something just plain admirable about a movie franchise which insists on digging...

Where in the World is Jason Bourne?
(4 1/2 *'s) `The Bourne Ultimatum' is a non-stop thriller ride that easily propels itself to the top of 2007's three-peat super summer. The third in the series, Jason Bourne (played superbly by a tough and tormented Matt Damon) still suffers his same identity crisis, this time criss-crossing his way across the globe with breakneck speed. Suspenseful for more than the thrill of the chase, we are given a gripping sense of drama as CIA director, Noah Vosen (played with tough officiousness by David Strathairn in another great performance) and his sparring co-leader, Pamela Landy (Joan Allen in an admirably complex role) come to grips with Bourne and his alleged treason against their assassination operation. Hooking up with a fellow operative Nicky Parsons (a sleight-of-hand Julia Stiles), Bourne and associates provide enough development to keep us guessing throughout.

Besides all of the identity intrigue, the action is relentless without being predictable. All the scenes of...

The Bourne Ultimatum
Jason Bourne (Damon) is still searching for his true identity, and is once again becoming a thorn in the side of the CIA. Noah Vosen (Strathairn), head of black ops targets him for elimination, and soon he is on the run again. This time around agents Pamela Landy (Allen) and Nicky Parsons (Stiles) are on his side, offering their assistance to stop the darker aspects of the CIA as well as help him find himself.

"The Bourne Ultimatum" is an excellent action movie, and a fitting end(?) to the Bourne trilogy. The best of the three and the best threequel of the summer, "Bourne" is nonstop action with a smart story. Matt Damon falls back into Bourne's shoes easily, and the supporting cast is once again top notch. The "Bourne" series has delivered top notch stories and action from the beginning, and it would be a shame if it didn't continue beyond this point. This is one of the best action trilogies ever made. I highly recommend this film.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia Complete Collection [Blu-ray]

A Horror, Romance, Harem, Mystery Hybrid that works...and looks beautiful!
When I first came across this anime, I had recently seen episodes of the psychological horror - Another: Complete Collection [Blu-ray] so I was ready for another supernatural anime to continue the trend. When I read the premise about a student who meets a female ghost with no memories, and decides to help her solve the mystery of her past, I decided to give it a try; open-mindedly expecting another entertaining supernatural experience. What I got was a hybrid of romance and harem, with shots of horror and mystery...and fan service to boot. This could easily turn some people off, but for me it worked, and worked well.
